i think that underline shouldn't be there, and it just looks awful.

Do you mean a border around the "where to search" selector?
It is an original style from the product manufacturer.
Look at the search bar at www.discuz.net. You will see the same!
Is the discuz.net  search bar style OK for you?
Or not ok?  ( I see NO differences between your screenshot and original site screenshot )
