Getting problem in showing ads,help me please

hello,

recently applied for google ads ,got the ad code even,but i do not know what sizes of banners will fit perfectly on my forum or which ad style is better,can any one help me out with this,
how to show a banner ad on both the sides of the home page???
and and just below or above the search bar??

No i mean that which function will show ads just below the blue navigation bar..where forum,groups,ranklist is written.and what should be the size of the ads.resolution? ...
